How Safe Sunless Tanning Works
What is DHA?
Hollywood Sun Uses Sunless Tanning, the Safe & Effective Tanning Method
Louis-Camille Maillard was the first person to describe this color changing reaction in 1912. Certain amino acids
interact with sugars to create color changes, usually brown or golden brown compounds. This type of interaction
is the cause of much of the browning that occurs during manufacture and storage of foods. It is also how bread
and beer turn golden brown.
When using a sunless tanning product, the reaction of skin with DHA to produce an artificial tan proceeds through a
combination with free amino groups in skin proteins. Epidermal proteins have a very high content of amino acids.
Various amino acids react differently to DHA , producing different tones of coloration from yellow to brown. The
resulting pigments are called melanoidins. These are similar in coloration to melanin, the natural substance in
the deeper skin layers which brown or "tan", from exposure to ultraviolet rays. Melanoidins are polymeric compounds
that are linked by certain amino acid side chains to the proteins of the stratum corneum.
Just what exactly is DHA (Dihydroxyacetone)? By the book it is a triose carbohydrate with chemical formula C3 H6 O3.
It is the simplest of all ketoses and, having no chiral centre, is the only one that has no optical activity. To give
you more, DHA is an intermediate in carbohydrate metabolism in higher plants and animals and is more rapidly
metabolized than glucose in the body. Specifically, this three-carbon keto sugar is a physiologic product of
the body formed and utilized during glycolysis.
Simply stated, Dihydroxyacetone is a simple non-toxic sugar. It is often derived from plant sources such as sugar
beets and sugar cane. (The kind used in sunless tanners is usually prepared by the fermentation of glycerin by
Acetobacter suboxydans.) It is a white crystalline powder, which is water-soluble. Dihydroxyacetone is used in
the cosmetics industry and usually is the main ingredient in most sunless tanning products.
The International Agency for Research on Cancer reports that anyone who sits under a sunlamp drastically increases
their risk of the deadliest form of skin cancer.
Young adults who lay in tanning beds boost their risk for melanoma by 75 percent, according to researchers, who
reviewed all studies done up to March 2006 to investigate the relationship between sunlamps and the disease.
In contrast, the Mayo Clinic reports Sunless Tanning as "a safe alternative to sunbathing." Additionally, the FDA
considers DHA to be safe when applied to your skin.
Risks associated with Tanning Lamps are:
- Sunburn
- Photokeratitis damage to the retinas
- Premature aging
- Skin cancer/weakening of the immune system
- People with fair skin or a history of sunburn are at greater risk for adverse effects from tanning lamps.
Sunless Tanning removes these risks and provides you with a great tan! Hollywood Sun is even safe for
expecting mothers! Now you can look your best without the worrying about any negative side effects.
